Idea

This page collects some useful references for the implementation of web applications with web standards, including JavaScript. This is intended as a help page for interested scientists that would like to use this technology for educational purposes, like the simple online climate model.

Webstandards

Every web page uses three standards to describe itself and its behaviour: HTML describes the document structure, CSS (cascading style sheets) describe the layout and JavaScript adds dynamical content, i.e. the capability of the page to react to user input without contacting the server. Note that most web pages have no clear separation and mingle layout information and structure in their HTML. That should no longer be done. For a description of the state of the art, see e.g.

  • Jeffrey Zeldman and Ethan Marcotte: “Designing with Web Standards”, New Riders Press, 3rd edition 2009

In recent years it has become an industry standard to use JavaScript to update only parts of a page, making the interaction with the user much more smooth. This techinque is dubbed AJAX for asynchronous JavaScript.

Coding Conventions

Every software project using any programming language needs coding conventions, so that the resulting software has a uniform “look and feel”. For projects using JavaScript, we highly recommend the google style guide.

Useful Libraries

GUI Libraries

There are several libraries available that help with the creation of GUI elements like input forms, buttons and the like. We recomment jQuery.

For learning jQuery, see e.g.

  • Adam Boduch: “jQuery UI Themes”, packt publishing, Birmingham 2011.

Graphic Libraries

For math graphs we recommend JSXGraph from the university of Bayreuth.

Javascript Compilers
