The Azimuth Project
Integral Fast Reactor

The Integral Fast Reactor almost made it into production. But the project was cancelled in 1994 three years before completion.

Key Features

  • The IFR recycles spent fuel from current nuclear reactors. Over 99% of the energy is left in the spent fuel and will provide all the energy the world needs for many centuries.

  • It is “walk away safe”, in that it is thermally stable and can’t melt down.

  • The IFR can safely convert plutonium into electrical energy.

  • It is claimed to provide the cheapest form of renewable energy.
